Stratego Board Game – Preface

stratego game boardLet’s get ready. You are about to embark ahead a journey into unknown territory where the enemy are ready to battle with your soldiers in the place named; Stratego Board Game. Continue with caution as you and your soldiers plan the way to catch their flag.

Planning a strategy is very important to protecting your own flag and your soldiers from being captured by the opponent. Appoint each of your men to attacking and defending positions based on their rank and title.

You must hide bombs where the enemy least expects them. Ask your men to watch out for their hidden grenades as well! And do not risk sacrificing your men by making one wrong move. You may have a chance to win when you always keep your opponents guessing your every move.

Basic strategies to Win the Game

  • Placing one’s pieces initially so as to protect the Flag, while possibly misleading the opponent as to where it is.
  • Making strong pieces available for attack.
  • Identifying patterns in the enemy’s movement during game play that give clues as to the distribution of his or her forces.
  • Starting with stronger pieces and/or Bombs farther away from the Flag (although this is risky), so as to trick one’s opponent into attacking the wrong side of the board.

How to Play Stratego Board Game?

The Goal
You have to capture your opponent flag by moving onto it with one of your pieces.

stratego board gameThe Setup
The game board is made up from a number of smaller squares. Before you begin, you must set up your pieces in the first few rows as your opponent does the same. Each player takes all the pieces of one color.

You may secretly arrange your pieces so their values are facing you and your opponent only see the other blank side. Set up your side of the board by placing one piece in each space in the back four rows.

How to Play
Each player must move one of the pieces toward the opponent. The flags and bombs are immobile and can never be moved. Every other piece may move one space in any of the four directions but not diagonally, as long as they land in either an empty space or a space containing an opposing piece.

The two lakes formations in the middle of the game board are impassable obstacles, and not valid spaces. The scouts may move any number of spaces in a straight line, but must stop on the space with the first enemy piece they encounter.

It’s kind of like chess…but it’s Secret Chess!

That opening quote is from my child, a new player to the world of Stratego, and it sums up the game quite well. The basic goals of this game haven’t changed with the passing of time – set up your pieces secretively, and try to capture the enemy’s flag to win the battle.

This is the 50th anniversary version of Stratego, and here are the most notable changes:

The Newer version–>

(1) Distant planet military setting
(2) Each player gets 30 pieces
(3) High numbered pieces are powerful – (10 = Marshall, 9 = General, etc)
(4) The Spotter – a piece that can capture any opponent’s piece by correctly guessing its rank.

The Older version–>

(1) Classic wartime military setting
(2) Each player gets 40 pieces.
(3) Low numbered pieces are powerful – (1 = Marshall, 2 = General, etc)
(4) There is no Spotter in this version

The basic strategies remain – using misdirection, placing bombs either near or far away from the flag, having the Spy lay in wait for the charging attack of the Marshall, and so forth.

The 2 Spotter pieces are a real game-changer. In the original game, I usually remembered where the bombs were, but paid little attention to other pieces. This newer version of Stratego rewards the player who memorizes the ranks of their opponents pieces, since the Spotters can defeat ANY piece on the board (as long as they are guessed correctly).

It took me a while to get used to playing this game with a lesser number of pieces and the reversed structure of power, but my daughter picked it up right away because she didn’t have to un-learn the older version.

If you like classic Stratego, this might take a while to get used to, but take it from this old dog: Calling in an orbital laser strike to decimate your foes is a GREAT new trick to learn.

When a piece lands on the same space as your opponent piece, also named as ‘attacking’ then the values of the 2 pieces are compared. After you compare the pieces, you may remove the piece with the worse rank. It is often happen the piece in the same rank when one piece attacks on opposing piece so both pieces are removed from the board game.

When your piece attacks a bomb, the attacking piece is immediately defeated, unless the attacker was a miner. In this case, the bomb is defeated. When your spy attacks the opposing Marshall then the Marshall is defeated. But if your spy attacks any other piece, or is attacked by any pieces including the Marshall then your spy is defeated.

Game End
If you attack your opponent’s flag with any piece, you win the game. If you cannot move a piece on your turn, you immediately lose the game.
